Neighborhood Support and Children's Connectedness
Summarizes research on the links between levels of neighborhood support, such as neighbors helping one another, and other types of "connectedness" that contribute to children's healthy development -- with family, peers, community, and activities

Psycho-Emotional Education for Occupational Therapists Supporting Individuals Assuming the Role of Family-Caregiver for People With a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
The purpose of this research was to identify the psycho-emotional needs of family-caregivers of individuals who sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and measure if there was a change in knowledge among occupational therapists, and occupational therapy students following a two-hour seminar covering topics identified in the literature. The topics covered in the seminar included the concept of ambiguous loss, the importance of validating emotions, the caregiver grieving process, and the importance of providing caregiver resources. To measure the change in knowledge, researchers utilized primarily a quantitative research design using pre- and post-test questionnaires with Likert- scale questions. The questionnaire also included a small number of qualitative, free response, follow up questions. A total of 15 participants completed the questionnaires and the quantitative data indicated an overall increase in knowledge among participants in this study. The qualitative, free-response questions were used to explore the clinical utility of this seminar and to determine directions for future research. The results of this research suggest that there is value in providing this type of education to occupational therapy clinicians and students. This type of seminar could be a valuable tool that better prepares occupational therapy clinicians to address the psycho-emotional needs of caregivers supporting an individual with a TBI
Making the Grade: Family Structure and Children’s Educational Participation in Colombia, Egypt, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Peru & Uruguay
Research in the U.S. and much of the developed world suggests that children in intact, twoparent
households typically do better on educational outcomes than do children in singleparent
and step-family households. While studies in the developed world generally indicate
that family structure influences educational outcomes, less is known about whether
children living with their two biological parents in the developing world have better
educational outcomes, all things being equal, than children in step- or single-parent
families, or children living in households without a biological parent. This is an important
gap in the literature because step- and single-parent families are becoming more common
in much of the developing world. Using data drawn from Demographic and Health Surveys
in six countries (Colombia, Egypt, India, Kenya, Nigeria, & Peru) and from the Continuous
Household Survey in Uruguay, we find that secondary-school-age children are more likely
to participate in schooling if they live with at least one biological parent. Moreover,
children in Colombia and Uruguay are also more likely to be enrolled in school if they live
with two parents

Genome-wide association study identifies multiple susceptibility loci for pancreatic cancer
We performed a multistage genome-wide association study (GWAS) including 7,683 individuals with pancreatic cancer and 14,397 controls of European descent. Four new loci reached genome-wide significance: rs6971499 at 7q32.3 (LINC-PINT; per-allele odds ratio [OR] = 0.79; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.74–0.84; P = 3.0×10−12), rs7190458 at 16q23.1 (BCAR1/CTRB1/CTRB2; OR = 1.46; 95% CI = 1.30–1.65; P = 1.1×10−10), rs9581943 at 13q12.2 (PDX1; OR = 1.15; 95% CI = 1.10–1.20; P = 2.4×10−9), and rs16986825 at 22q12.1 (ZNRF3; OR = 1.18; 95% CI = 1.12–1.25; P = 1.2×10−8). An independent signal was identified in exon 2 of TERT at the established region 5p15.33 (rs2736098; OR = 0.80; 95% CI = 0.76–0.85; P = 9.8×10−14). We also identified a locus at 8q24.21 (rs1561927; P = 1.3×10−7) that approached genome-wide significance located 455 kb telomeric of PVT1. Our study has identified multiple new susceptibility alleles for pancreatic cancer worthy of follow-up studies
